In celebration of ‪#‎PreservationMonth‬

In celebration of ‪#‎PreservationMonth‬ we feature George Washington’s Mount Vernon and the ladies who helped save this National Historic Landmark! George Washington’s home remained in family hands after his death, but the house was near collapse by 1858 when Ann Pamela Cunningham organized the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association to purchase it. This was one of the first instances of an organized preservation effort in the country. The Association served as an early model for or…ganizations involved in saving landmark structures threatened by encroaching development or neglect over time. Their significant effort also helped form some of the early trends of the preservation movement in the United States. Over the years the Association has restored and furnished Mount Vernon with Washington pieces, relandscaped the extensive grounds, and rebuilt dependencies.
